Good to know

Cold mornings find weak batteries

New England winters are hard on batteries. A battery that worked fine in October can quit on the first cold morning.

After a jump, drive 20 to 30 minutes so the alternator can recharge it. If it dies again soon after, the battery or alternator needs a shop.

While you wait

Stuck on the side of the road? Stay safe first.

  • Turn your hazard lights on right away.
  • If the car still rolls, get it off the travel lane and onto the shoulder or into a lot.
  • Stay away from traffic. Stand behind the guardrail when there is one, never between your car and the road.
  • Keep your phone charged and share your exact spot: street, cross street, exit or mile marker.

Massachusetts' Move Over law asks drivers to slow down and move over for stopped emergency and tow vehicles, but never count on it: stay out of the lane.

What to tell us when you call

  • Exact location: street, cross street or exit
  • Vehicle year, make and model
  • What happened
  • Is it in a safe spot?
  • Where you want it towed

Questions

Jump Start questions

Done correctly, with the cables connected in the right order, a jump is routine. That's one reason to let someone with the right gear do it.

About 20 to 30 minutes of real driving, not idling in the driveway, so the battery can recharge.

That usually means the battery won't hold a charge or the alternator isn't charging it. Call us and we can tow it to your mechanic.

Tell us the make and model when you call and we'll let you know.
